Insights/ London’s new kid on the block – The Mayfair Townhouse
Author: Charlotte McCormack
We have noticed a welcomed buzz in London this month, with some new hotel openings happening right now and into 2021. This is so promising to see after an incredibly challenging year for our wonderful venues. We thought it would be a great idea to catch up with some hoteliers to find out more about their luxurious properties as we start to look ahead to in person events again. Here we speak to Federico Ciampi, the General Manager of The Mayfair Townhouse, to find out more about the hotel which is part of Iconic Luxury Hotels.
When did the hotel open and what steps have you taken to ensure your guests have confidence that you are a safe pair of hands?
We were delighted to be able to open the doors for the first time at The Mayfair Townhouse on Thursday 3rd December and, in light of the Government’s announcement, Iconic Luxury Hotels have introduced detailed precautions and procedures as part of Tier 2 listing across all of its hotels to ensure that guests can escape to the properties with total confidence.
Full details are available to download from our website. The good news under Tier 2 restrictions is that guests can dine in The Dandy Bar, followed by a drink, shop until they drop in Mayfair and explore the amazing city of London as its prepares for the festive season. Small weddings of up to 15 people can also take place and if you are looking to mix business with pleasure we are also able to welcome appropriate business meetings. I am responsible for all aspects of our ‘COVID-19 Secure’ operating plan and guests can contact the Duty Manager at any time prior to, and during their stay, should they have any concerns related to this or any other matter.
Describe your hotel in 3 words!
Curious, Engaging, Intuitive
What’s your favourite bedroom and why?
#501 – The Loft Suite, this is our only suite on two levels, the view over Sheperds Market and Park Lane makes this a unique suite with your own private balcony, right in the heart of Mayfair
Can you tell us a little more about the unique meeting spaces within the hotel?
It is a very interesting concept – first, we are anything but traditional. That’s why we’ve created a place to work, connect, and engage with the personalities of the time. The event spaces in the townhouse, located in The Lower Ground are a vibrant space where we have two Club Rooms as well as two Private dining Rooms named Oscar’s Study and The Den – which gives you a feeling of belonging to the residences’ owner: a versatile oasis for private dining or elegant gathering place.
How are you coping with the limitations the pandemic has forced upon us all and how do you keep your team motivated?
Teamwork and great communication is always essential to the success of any project, and unlike many organisations who have been facing less positive business challenges due to the effects of the pandemic, we have been in the interesting position of preparing to ‘open’ a fabulous new property – with a totally different set of logistical and operational challenges that have enhanced teamwork and provided an end-goal to drive our team forward.
Supported by the full management, operational and administrative resources of Iconic Luxury Hotel, we have worked tirelessly to prepare to open on the 3rd December. Working through a detailed critical path, our teams have had clear objectives and the flexibility to adapt to the constantly changing landscape that the pandemic as has brought to us all.
We have respected the COVID-19 rules and guidelines and operated safely within them, and whilst no one will under estimate how difficult at times some situations have been, our team is now far stronger and better prepared for the future. Regular communication between all team members and access to support when needed, together with an open-door policy has kept the team fully informed and engaged in the task of opening The Mayfair Townhouse.
The hotel is going to be full of spectacular artwork. Which piece is your favourite?
As the saying goes: ‘They are like my children, I have no favourite.’
Tell us about your fabulous food!
The best of British with a twist but also a personality. Some of the dishes are inspired from some of our staff’s fond childhood memories. For instance, who does not like a Tiramisu? Yes, it is not English but it is my mum’s own recipe and I am sure it will be a favourite of our guests – as it has been for me for a very long time.
What would be your ‘dream’ celebration and where when this is all over?
First, my wife and I have been looking at many places where we could go and as soon as we can, we would love to take some time off with our daughter. Also, for me, it is to know me and my team at The Mayfair Townhouse have done something very special – our aim is to reinvent what London hotels can do and create a place where our clients have a feeling of ‘leaving wanting more’.
