Insights/ Inspiring the next generation of Event Professionals with Founders4Schools

Author: Amanda Edgcumbe

This month I was invited to attend a Career Speed Networking event by Founders4Schools at Burntwood School; a girls’ secondary school in my local community in Wandsworth, London.

Founders4Schools is an award-winning charity that connects educators with a network of business leaders, to improve the employment chances of young people and to help prepare them for the rapidly changing world of work - organising events such as role-model sessions, mock interviews and work place visits.

The event was made up of a group of business leaders from a variety of industries, institutions and SME’s. Year 9 pupils were given the chance to spend 5 minutes with each of us to ask any questions they might have about our industry sector, how we got started and our own career pathways.

As the pupils already knew who was attending and had been given some background on our various industries, they came prepared with some great questions and I had some fantastic discussions with the girls. They all had a common curiosity about innovation and business, especially the creative industry, and I felt truly inspired and excited to be meeting the next generation of possible event professionals!

It really drove home to me how much of an asset young people are to any workplace, bringing fresh ideas, tremendous enthusiasm and a great willingness to learn.

At Powwow, we have always offered work experience placements and many of our long-standing team members actually started their careers with us as interns or from work placements and this is something we will continue to do.

Organisations like Founders4Schools really are helping to bridge the gap between business and education and I would encourage any business leader to sign up so that you too can inspire, and be inspired by, young people in your local community. I think you’d love it!
